Don’t start teaching boys not to rape when they’re in middle school. That’s too late.

Start teaching them not to rape by treating all of the girls and women they encounter like they have worth and value, even when you think little boys and men aren’t watching.

Don’t like Helen from PTA? Fine. She’s still a person and she still has value. Make sure that your son understands that “I don’t like her” doesn’t mean “she’s worthless trash.”

A girl beats your son at the spelling bee or soccer or the science fair? Good. She was better at it. Period. Teach him that there is no more shame in being beaten by a girl than by anyone else.

Your son thinks his female teacher is mean because she doesn’t let him get away with whatever he wants? Good. It means she’s doing her job. Now do yours.

Your son’s coach taunts his players with “you throw/run/kick/hit like a girl”? Quit the team. Report the coach. There are other teams and other sports. Your son probably won’t be an Olympian anyway, and there are girls and women out there who can throw/run/hit/kick his ass. “Like a girl” is not an insult.

Let your son read books with female protagonists. Make SURE your son reads books with female protagonists. Are the TV shows he’s watching demeaning the female characters? Don’t watch those shows, even if they’re popular. Even if Johnny down the street has a birthday party with that show as its theme. That’s Johnny’s house. Not yours.

Teach your sons from birth that women are people.

People act like having a son is easier than having a daughter, but that’s because they aren’t working to make sure that it’s not. Don’t make someone else’s job harder, having a daughter, by refusing to work hard for your son.
